5th Sunday in Lent

Please stand, all who are able.

Song
//I shall praise you, O God, from my soul;//
though my song be at odds with the will of earthly gods,
I shall praise you, O God, from my soul.

//I shall bow down before heaven’s throne;//
and with joy I’ll confess your great love and faithfulness.
I shall bow down before heaven’s throne.

//God, your promise is raised above heaven;//
you replied to my please, giving hope and strenth to me.
God, your promise is raised above heaven.

//Let the monarchs of earth know your name;//
let them learn of your ways and respond in fear and praise.
Let the monarchs of earth know your name.

//Though exalted, God cares for the poor;//
and God notes if the proud walk the paths God disallowed.
Though exalted, God cares for the poor.

Call to Worship

One:  Is anyone  discouraged?
All:  Let them hear the word and find new vision.
One:  Is anyone  weak?
All:  Let them come and be filled with the strength of the Spirit.
One:  Is anyone  sorrowful?
All:  Let them come and be comforted by God's presence.

Song
Elyse:  O the beautiful treasures laid up for the wise,
how precious the value, how glorious the prize!
Far brighter than diamonds on princes’ brow,
and richer than royalty can bestow.
O the beautiful treasure laid up for the wise.

All:  O the beautiful treasures provided by God,
and promised good people who follow the Word.
And streams of sweet mercy shall bring them home,
to rest from the sorrowful paths they roam.
O the beautiful treasure provided by God.

Prayer of Confession
NOT ON PPT

Coming together, face to face with God and with one another, and seeking to live into full and perfect reconciliation, we recognize that we have sometimes fallen short of our aspirations and seek forgiveness.  Let us pray.

One:  O God,
All:  we confess the blindness that is not even aware of sinning;
One:  the pride that dares not admit that it is wrong;
All:  the selfishness that can see nothing but its own will;
One:  the righteousness that knows no fault;
All:  the callousness that has ceased to care;
One:  the defiance that does not regret its own sins;
All:  the evasion that always tries to make excuses;
One:  the coldness of heart that is too hardened to repent.
All:  God, we are sinners; be merciful to us.

—Silent reflection—

One:  All our problems
All:  We send to the cross of Christ
One:  All our difficulties
All:  We send to the cross of Christ
One:  All the devil's works
All:  We send to the cross of Christ
One:  All our hopes
All:  We set on the risen Christ
One:  Christ the Sun of righteousness shine upon us and scatter the darkness from before our path: and the blessing of God Almighty, Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, be among us, and remain with us always.
All:  Amen.  Thanks be to God!

Please stand, all who are able.

Song of Praise
The matriarchs' God and ours
who leads us onward still,
inspire our hearts, unite our minds
to work God's will.
Rock, Saviour, Maker, Lamb,
we sing your praise anew;
the Mother, Father, great 'I am',
we worship you.

Prayer of the Day
NOT ON PPT

Holy Friend, please infiltrate our lives with your Holy Spirit, that we may possess the courage to pick up the cross of discipleship and carry it as a high honour. Make us ashamed of nothing except our own sin, and afraid of nothing except the temptation to turn aside for an easier, downhill path. Make us ready to pay the price of faithfulness, to the glory of Christ Jesus our Lord.
Amen!

Gospel Acclamation
//Cantor:  Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
All:  Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.//
Cantor:  Your words are spirit, Lord, and they are life: you have the message of eternal life.
//Cantor:  Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
All:  Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.//

Gospel Reading
Luke 18:18-30

INCLUDE THIS ON PPT THIS WEEK

Narrator:  A certain ruler approached Jesus with a question.

Ruler:  “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Jesus:  “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honor your father and mother.’”

Ruler:  “I have kept all these since my youth.”

Jesus:  “There is still one thing lacking. Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”

Narrator:  But when he heard this, he became sad; for he was very rich.

Jesus:  “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!  Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

All: “Then who can be saved?”

Jesus:  “What is impossible for mortals is possible for God.”

Peter: “Look, we have left our homes and followed you.”

Jesus:  “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, who will not get back very much more in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.”

Reader:  The gospel of Jesus Christ.
All:  Thanks be to God!

Sermon

Please stand, all who are able.

Song
1.  Time is filled with swift transition,
Naught of earth unmoved can stand.
Build your hopes on things eternal.
Hold to God’s unchangin’ hand.
You better hold to God’s hand.
God’s unchangin’ hand.
Hold to God’s hand.
God’s unchangin’ hand.
Build your hopes on things eternal.
And hold to God’s unchangin’ hand.

2. Trust in God who will not leave you,
Whatsoever years may bring.
If by earthly friends forsaken,
Still more closely to God cling.
You better hold to God’s hand.
God’s unchangin’ hand.
Hold to God’s hand.
God’s unchangin’ hand.
Build your hopes on things eternal.
And hold to God’s unchangin’ hand.

3. Covet not this world’s vain riches
That so rapidly decay.
Seek to gain the heavenly treasures.
They will never pass away.
You better hold to God’s hand.
God’s unchangin’ hand.
Hold to God’s hand.
God’s unchangin’ hand.
Build your hopes on things eternal.
And hold to God’s unchangin’ hand.

4.  When your journey is completed,
if to God you have been true,
fair and bright the home in glory
your enraptured soul will view.
You better hold to God’s hand.
God’s unchangin’ hand.
Hold to God’s hand.
God’s unchangin’ hand.
Build your hopes on things eternal.
And hold to God’s unchangin’ hand.

Affirmation of Faith in words of Judy Chicago
One:  And then all that has divided us will merge
and compassion will be wedded to power,
All:  Softness and wonder will come to a world that is harsh and unkind
One:  And then both men and women will be gentle;
All:  both women and men will be strong.

One:  And then no person will be subject to another’s will
All will be rich and free and varied
All:  And then the greed of some will give way to the needs of many
One:  All will share equally in Earth’s abundance
All:  And then all will care for the sick and the weak and the old
One:  All will nourish the young
All:  And then all will cherish life’s creatures
One:  All will live in harmony with each other and the Earth
All:  And then everywhere will be called Eden once again.

Song
Oh children of the light, together raise a joyful song.
With gladness and with gratitude sing praises unto God.

In Jesus’ holy presence raise your hands and hearts,
in praise and thanks to Jesus Christ, the savior of the world;
in praise and thanks to Christ, the savior of the world.

Oh children of the light, together raise a joyful song.
With gladness and with gratitude sing praises unto God.

You chosen ones of God, be bold and strong in faith;
Accept the victory of your God and claim it as your own;
accept the victory and claim it as your own.

Oh children of the light, together raise a joyful song.
With gladness and with gratitude sing praises unto God.

Beloved ones of God, into God’s pasture come,
in sorrow and in trouble call upon the Chosen One of God;
in good times and in bad, God hears your every prayer.

Elyse:
////Ewe thina.////
Sizowa nyathela amadimoni.

All:
////We walk his way.////
Unarmed he faces forces of demons and death;
we walk his way.

////We walk his way.////
He breaks the bonds of hell, dying on the cross;
we walk his way.

////We walk his way.////
The tree of freedom blooms by his empty grave;
we walk his way.

////We walk his way.////
