READ THIS COLUMN Pastor:  Eternal God, you nourish and sustain all living things by the gift of water.  In the beginning of time, your Spirit moved over the watery chaos, calling forth life.  You led Israel out of slavery, through the waters of the sea, into the freedom of the promised land. in the waters of the jordan, Jesus was baptized by John and anointed withyour Spirit.  By the baptism of his own death and resurrection, Christ set us free from sin and death, and opened the way to eternal life.  We thank you God, for the water of Baptism.  In it we are buried with Christ in his death, From it we are raised to share in his resurrection.  Through it we are reborn by the power of the Holy Spirit. Send your Spirit to move over this water that it may be a fountain of deliverance and rebirth.  Wash away the sin of the one who is cleansed by it.  Raise him to new life and graft him to the body of Christ.  Pour out your Holy Spirit upon him, that he may have power to do your will and continue forever in the risen life of Christ.  To you, our creator, savior and comforter, one God, be all praise, honor and glory, Amen.

Prayer of Confession

One:  Jesus criticised those who said 'yes' to him with their lips but denied him with their deeds.
All:  Forgive us, O God, the times when we use feeble excuses to evade
following in Christ's footsteps.
One:  The invitation to us is an invitation of grace - those who eventually sat down at the banquet could never have expected such an invitation.
All:  Forgive us, O God, when we trivialise the gracious invitation to share your life in Christ - when we expect you to be there for us - but fail to respond to your call on our lives.
One:  Help us to empty ourselves of all that hinders a ready response to the call to follow Jesus:

The next day John the Baptizer saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.” The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!”

The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.

Grace alone can save us on God’s judgment day.

We at Jordan’s river meet on level ground.
