Canto de Adoración y Alabanza
Jesucristo, esperanza del mundo + Jesus Christ, hope of the world
//Aie, eia, ae, ae, ae.//

The bud of your hope and your love gives signs of the flower which will be
a promise of life in abundance your presence allows us to see.
Lord, let your kingdom come near, renewing the joy of the world,
and all of our hope and our sorrow transform into fullness of joy.
Alleluia, alle, alleluia.

14.08.10 Ordinary Time 19A Reflection

It is useless to utter fervent petitions for that Kingdom to be established and that Will be done, unless we are willing to do something about it ourselves. ... We are agents of the Creative Spirit in this world. Real advance in the spiritual life means accepting this vocation with all it involves.

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Please stand, all who are able.

Hymn
Wake now, my senses, and hear the earth call;
feel the deep power of being in all;
keep, with the web of creation your vow,
giving, receiving as love shows us how.

Wake now, my reason, reach out to the new,
join with each pilgrim who quests for the true;
honor the beauty and wisdom of time;
suffer your limit, and praise the sublime.

Wake now, compassion, give heed to the cry;
voices of suffering fill the wide sky;
take as your neighbor both stranger and friend,
praying and striving their hardship to end.

Wake now, my conscience, with justice your guide;
join with all people whose rights are denied;
take not for granted a privileged place;
God's love embraces the whole human race.

Wake now, my vision of ministry clear;
brighten my pathway with radiance here;
mingle my calling with all who will share;
work toward a planet transformed by our care.

Call to Worship
One:  We come to this celebration of life
All:  in our need, and bringing with us
the needs of our selves and others.
One:  We come remembering amazing stories of people
coming to awareness through reflection on the life of Jesus,
All:  that the same Spirit that moved in him,
moved in them and moves in us.
One:  We come with our faith and with our questions.
All:  We come with our hopes and our fears.
One:  We come as we are.
All:  For this community seeks to embrace the inclusiveness of God.

NOT ON PPT

One:  We pray:
Blossom of Love, give us courage and an open spirit
as we consider the life and teachings of Jesus.
May we feel an invitational embrace
beckoning us to fullness of life, where we
celebrate beauty and
engage the causes of suffering.
Amen.

Song
Christ be beside me, Christ be before me,
Christ be behind me, King of my heart.
Christ be within me, Christ be below me,
Christ be above me, never to part.

Christ on my right hand, Christ on my left hand,
Christ all around me, shield in the strife.
Christ in my sleeping, Christ in my sitting,
Christ in my rising, light of my heart.

Christ be in all hearts thinking about me,
Christ be on all tongues telling of me.
Christ be the vision in eyes that see me,
In ears that hear me Christ ever be.

Prayer of Confession
NOT ON PPT

Let us confess together that we have not always lived as those forgiven, set free and united in Christ.

One:  Holy God, we come before You acknowledging that we have acted poorly in times of faith and doubt. We have ignored our neighbors in need and forgotten the cries of the poor and hungry around us. We have cried out in anger to You when we are lacking our desires, and claim You have not heard us. Forgive us for our shortcomings.

All:  Forgive us for not acting in faithfulness to our neighbors and to You. Turn us back to Your ways. In the name of Christ, who went to the cross for us and cried out to You, we pray all things. Amen.

—silent reflection—

One:  Christ is the one who calls out to us in the storms of life and says, “It is I, do not be afraid.” Trust that God is calling you, even when you cannot hear God’s voice. Know that God loves you, even if you don’t always feel loved. Know that you are forgiven, even if you don’t always feel you deserve it. God loves you so much God has sent Jesus to the world, so that all of us might know God’s love. Know this, and live.
All:  Thanks be to God!

Please stand, all who are able.

Song of Praise
//I ‘ve got a crown up in-a the Kingdom
Ain’t-a that good news.//
I’m going to lay down this world
Going to shoulder up my cross
Goin’ to take it home to Jesus
Ain’t-a that good news

//I ‘ve got a harp up in-a the Kingdom
Ain’t-a that good news.//
I’m going to lay down this world
Going to shoulder up my cross
Goin’ to take it home to Jesus
Ain’t-a that good news

//I ‘ve got a Savior in-a the Kingdom
Ain’t-a that good news.//
I’m going to lay down this world
Going to shoulder up my cross
Goin’ to take it home to Jesus
Ain’t-a that good news

No other plans. A story
By Wm. J. Bausch
NOT ON PPT

Upon Jesus’ arrival in heaven, a vast host of angels greeted him.
After the formalities,
they asked him whom he had left behind on earth
to finish the work he had begun.
Jesus replied,
‘Just a small group of men and women who love me.’
‘That’s all?’ asked the angels, astonished.
‘What if this tiny group should fail?’
Jesus replied:  ‘I have no other plans.’

Gospel Acclamation

Gospel Reading
Matthew 14:22-33
NOT ON PPT

Narrator:  Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified,

Disciples:  “It is a ghost!”

Narrator:  And they cried out in fear.

Jesus:  “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”

Peter:  “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”

Jesus:   “Come.”

Narrator:  So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and began to sink.

Peter:  “Lord, save me!”

Narrator:  Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him.

Jesus:  “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Narrator:  When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him.

All:  “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Sermon

Please stand, all who are able.

Hymn
Jesus calls us, o’er the tumult
of our life’s wild, restless sea;
day by day that voice still calls us,
saying, “Christian, follow me.”

As of old, Saint Andrew heard it
by the Galilean lake,
turned from home and toil and kindred,
leaving all for Jesus’ sake.

Jesus calls us from the worship
of the treasures we adore,
from each idol that would keep us,
saying, “Christian, love me more.”

In our joys and in our sorrows,
days of toil and hours of ease,
Jesus calls, in cares and pleasures,
“Christian, love me more than these.”

Jesus calls us! By your mercies,
Savior, may we hear your call,
give our hearts to your obedience,
serve and love you best of all.

A Litany:  “Basketful”
One:  Spirit of God,
brooding over the waters
of our chaos,
All:  inspire us to generous living.
One:  Wind of God,
dancing over the desert
of our reluctance,
All:  lead us to the oasis of celebration.
One:  Breath of God,
inspiring communication
among strangers,
All:  make us channels of your peace,
One:  that we may give
in deep thankfulness,
All:  placing the overflowing basket
of our gifts
on the table
of rejoicing.

Song
1.  You are salt for the earth, O people:
salt for the reign of God!
Share the flavor of life, O people:
life in the City of God.
Bring forth the reign of mercy,
bring forth the reign of peace;
bring forth the reign of justice,
bring forth the City of God!

2.  You are a light on a hill, O people:
light for the City of God!
Shine so holy and bright, O people:
shine for the City of God.
Bring forth the reign of mercy,
bring forth the reign of peace;
bring forth the reign of justice,
bring forth the City of God!

3.  You are a seed of the Word, O people:
bring forth the reign of God!
Seeds of mercy and seeds of justice
grow in the City of God.
Bring forth the reign of mercy,
bring forth the reign of peace;
bring forth the reign of justice,
bring forth the City of God!

4.  We are a blessed and a pilgrim people:
bound for the reign of God!
Love our journey and love our homeland:
love is the City of God!
Bring forth the reign of mercy,
bring forth the reign of peace;
bring forth the reign of justice,
bring forth the City of God!

Song
1.  Travel on, travel on,
there’s a spirit that is flowing,
a spirit that is flowing night and day.
Travel on, travel on

there’s a spirit that is growing,
the spirit grows like flowers night and day.
travel on, travel on
//with the flower that is growing,
the spirit will be with us all the way.//

3.  Travel on, travel on,
there’s a spirit that is playing,
the spirit plays like music every day.
//Travel on, travel on
with the music that is playing,
the spirit will be with us all the way.//

4.  In the kingdom of heaven
is our end and our beginning,
and the road that we must follow every day.
//Travel on, travel on
to the kingdom that is coming,
the kingdom will be with us all the way.//
