Please stand, all who are able.

Let us confess together that we have not always lived as those forgiven, set free and united in Christ.

One:  Holy God, we come before You acknowledging that we have acted poorly in times of faith and doubt. We have ignored our neighbors in need and forgotten the cries of the poor and hungry around us. We have cried out in anger to You when we are lacking our desires, and claim You have not heard us. Forgive us for our shortcomings.

All:  Forgive us for not acting in faithfulness to our neighbors and to You. Turn us back to Your ways. In the name of Christ, who went to the cross for us and cried out to You, we pray all things. Amen.

One:  Christ is the one who calls out to us in the storms of life and says, “It is I, do not be afraid.” Trust that God is calling you, even when you cannot hear God’s voice. Know that God loves you, even if you don’t always feel loved. Know that you are forgiven, even if you don’t always feel you deserve it. God loves you so much God has sent Jesus to the world, so that all of us might know God’s love. Know this, and live.

All:  Thanks be to God!

Upon Jesus’ arrival in heaven, a vast host of angels greeted him.
After the formalities,
they asked him whom he had left behind on earth
to finish the work he had begun.

Jesus replied,
‘Just a small group of men and women who love me.’
‘That’s all?’ asked the angels, astonished.

‘What if this tiny group should fail?’
Jesus replied:  ‘I have no other plans.’

Matthew 14:22-33

Narrator:  Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified,

Disciples:  “It is a ghost!”

Narrator:  And they cried out in fear. 

Jesus:  “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” 

Peter:  “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 

Jesus:   “Come.”

Narrator:  So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and began to sink.

Peter:  “Lord, save me!” 

Narrator:  Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him.

Jesus:  “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Narrator:  When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him.

All:  “Truly you are the Son of God.”

As of old, Saint Andrew heard it

by the Galilean lake,

turned from home and toil and kindred,
