14.03.16 Lent 2A Reflection

We may ignore, but we can nowhere evade, the presence of God. The world is crowded with God. God walks everywhere incognito. And the incognito is not always hard to penetrate. The real labor is to remember, to attend. In fact, to come awake. Still more, to remain awake.

~C. S. Lewis

Vamos todos al banquete
Vamos todos al banquete, a la mesa de la creación;

Hoy me levanto muy temprano, ya me espera la comunidad;

Let us go now to the banquet, to the feast of the universe;
the table’s set and a place is waiting; come everyone with your gifts to share.

God invites all the poor and hungry to the banquet of justice and good
where the harvest will not be hoarded so that no one will lack for food.

Vamos todos al banquete, a la mesa de la creación;

Dios nos manda a hacer de este mundo una mesa donde haya igualdad;

Vamos todos al banquete, a la mesa de la creación;

God of the women + Dios de la mujeres
Sara, Ana, Miriam, Rebeca y Rut:
que hoy día encarnemos su valor, rectitud.

God of the women who walked Jesus’ Way,
Giving their resources, learning to pray–
Mary, Joanna, Susanna, and more:
May we give freely as they did before.

Dios de las mujeres en gran aflicción,
en el olvido, sufriendo opresión;

God of the women long who ran from the tomb,
Prayed with the others in that upper room,
Then felt your Spirit on Pentecost Day:
May we so gladly proclaim you today.

Oh Dios de Febe, te oimos llamar
a las mujeres para ministrar.
Danos fortaleza, valor y visión,
al compartir hoy en día tu misión.

Invitation to the Table + Invitación a la Mesa

Prayer of Thanksgiving + Acción de gracias
Uno/a:  Dios habita en ustedes.
Todos/as:  Y también en ti.
One:  Come to the table with thankful hearts.
All:  We open our hearts to God and to one another.

READ THIS COLUMN

One:  It is right to give you thanks, Creator of all, for your voice alone brought light and life to birth when all began. You called each one of us to be, and named us with the name that you alone could speak.

Yet you in your love did not desert us, but instead sent your Beloved to seek us out, to gather in the lost and outcaste. He did not turn away from us, but called us to your table and made us sharers in your life. He threw open the doors of freedom, casting out the darkness of our hearts and greeting us as God’s beloved friends and children. In place of judgment, he gave us compassion; in place of condemnation, healing.

And when the night was darkest, and our loss complete, he broke upon us like the coming of the dawn, and shattered death itself within the empty tomb. He called us once again by name, and chose us to be bearers of his Word.

THIS COLUMN ON PPT

You called us to be lovers of creation, and to care for each other as you had cared for us. But we betrayed your trust — and we in turn became the victims of betrayal. The bond of trust became the bondage of division: male and female, Jew and Gentile, slave and free, oppressor and oppressed. Our hearts became the haunt of demons; sin and sickness held us captive; and our own kin cast us out.

And even as he came to share our suffering, he called us to be witnesses to his; to follow in the way that led him to the cross; and to see with our own eyes the depths of your forgiveness.

All + Todos/as: Te alabemos, te bendecimos, te damos gracias, y oramos a ti, Señor nuestro Dios.
We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you and we pray to you, Lord our God.

One:  Now, as he promised, send us your loving Spirit, to make this bread and this cup the life-giving body and blood of your Christ, and to make us one with him in your covenant of love.

Give us courage not to cling to what is past, but to proclaim the freedom of new life, as together with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, we sing the triumphal song --

THIS COLUMN ON PPT

One:  Therefore, Loving God, of all the things that are yours, we offer you these, which are yours especially. We offer them gladly, as he told us, giving thanks for his death and resurrection. And having seen the glory of the Risen One, we praise you and we bless you:

All + Todos/as: Te alabemos, te bendecimos, te damos gracias, y oramos a ti, Señor nuestro Dios.
We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you and we pray to you, Lord our God.

One:  Holy, holy, holy Lord,
All:  Holy, holy, holy Lord,
One:  Gichi Manidoo,
All:  Gichi Manidoo,
One:  heaven and earth are full of your glory.  Hosanna in the highest.
All:  Hosanna in the highest.
One:  Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.  Hosanna in the highest.
All:  Hosanna in the highest.

All:
Our Father-Mother in heaven,
hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread;
forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and forever.
Amen.
Todos/as:

How very good

How very good and pleasant it is.
How very good and pleasant it is.
How very good and pleasant it is when believers are in unity.
Like the dew of Hermon which falls on the mountaintops of Zion.

How very good and pleasant it is.
How very good and pleasant it is.
How very good and pleasant it is when believers are in unity.
For there God ordained a blessing: life forevermore.

¡Miren que bueno, que bueno es!
How very good and pleasant it is.

El que vino con la paz,
¡el Salvador!
nos envía a las calles,
a las flores, al dolor.
Nos envía a las calles,

the Savior,
sends us now into the streets,
to keep silent and to speak,
sends us now into the streets,
to announce true liberty.

1st Sunday in Lent

Please stand, all who are able.

Song
//I shall praise you, O God, from my soul;//
though my song be at odds with the will of earthly gods,
I shall praise you, O God, from my soul.

//I shall bow down before heaven’s throne;//
and with joy I’ll confess your great love and faithfulness.
I shall bow down before heaven’s throne.

//God, your promise is raised above heaven;//
you replied to my please, giving hope and strenth to me.
God, your promise is raised above heaven.

//Let the monarchs of earth know your name;//
let them learn of your ways and respond in fear and praise.
Let the monarchs of earth know your name.

//Though exalted, God cares for the poor;//
and God notes if the proud walk the paths God disallowed.
Though exalted, God cares for the poor.

Invocation
NOT ON PPT

It is a sacred time, this.
And a sacred place, this:
- a place for questions more profound than answers;
- vulnerability more powerful than strength;
- and a peace that can pass all understanding.
It is a sacred time, this.
We pray:
Surprising God, as you lead us into new experiences,
help us to be open to your presence
among us and within.
Let us sense your glory in the sights
and sounds of this Lenten day.
Amen.

Please be seated

Song
Love will be our Lenten calling,
love to shake and shatter sin,
waking every closed, cold spirit,
stirring new life deep within,
till the quickened heart remembers
what our Easter birth can mean.

Peace will be our Lenten living
as we turn for home again,
longing for the words of pardon,
stripping off old grief and pain,
till we stand, restored and joyful,
with the Church on Easter day.

Truth will be our Lenten learning:
hear the Crucified One call!
Shadowed by the Saviour's passion,
images and idols fall,
and, in Easter's holy splendour,
God alone is all in all. (ESmith)

Prayer of Confession
NOT ON PPT

Coming together, face to face with God and with one another, and seeking to live into full and perfect reconciliation, we recognize that we have sometimes fallen short of our aspirations and seek forgiveness.  Let us pray.

—silent personal reflection—

One: You take away our sins:
Lord have mercy.
All: Lord have mercy.

One: You create a pure heart in us:
Christ have mercy.
All: Christ, have mercy.

One: You give us again the joy of salvation:
Lord, have mercy.
All: Lord have mercy.

—silent personal reflection—

One:  All our problems
All:  We send to the cross of Christ
One:  All our difficulties
All:  We send to the cross of Christ
One:  All the devil's works
All:  We send to the cross of Christ
One:  All our hopes
All:  We set on the risen Christ
One:  Christ the Sun of righteousness shine upon us and scatter the darkness from before our path: and the blessing of God Almighty, Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, be among us, and remain with us always.
All:  Amen.  Thanks be to God!

Please stand, all who are able.

Song of Praise
The matriarchs' God and ours
who leads us onward still,
inspire our hearts, unite our minds
to work God's will.
Rock, Saviour, Maker, Lamb,
we sing your praise anew;
the Mother, Father, great 'I am',
we worship you.

Prayer of the Day
NOT ON PPT

Loving God, through your full affinity with Jesus of Nazareth, you know what it is like to be badly tempted. Through our affinity with him, we know that you are not oblivious to our difficulties.
Pity us as we try to live faithfully and lovingly in this world of incessant temptation. By your Word sustain us, in your Word secure us, through your Word deliver us, and with your Word send us on our way rejoicing. Through Christ our Lord.
Amen!

Gospel Acclamation
//Cantor:  Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
All:  Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.//
Cantor:  One does not live by bread alone, by bread alone, but,
by the words that come from the mouth, from the mouth of God.
//Cantor:  Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
All:  Glory and praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.//

Gospel Reading
Matthew 4:1-11

NOT ON PPT

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was famished. The tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Chosen One, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”Then the devil took him to the holy city and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, “If you are the Chosen One, throw yourself down; for it is written, ‘God will command the angels concerning you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Holy One your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor; and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! for it is written, ‘Worship the Holy One your God, and serve only God.’” Then the devil left him, and suddenly angels came and waited on him.

Song
1.  //Driven by the Spirit out in the wilderness.//
When the Spirit says, “Go,” you can’t say, “No.”
You listen for the voice when you’re bended low.
Driven by the Spirit out in the wilderness.

2.  //Tempted by the Devil out in the wilderness.//
Though you try to be strong, it’s been so long,
he whispers in your ear and you know he’s wrong.
Tempted by the Devil out in the wilderness.

3.  //Angels all around you out in the wilderness.//
You are far from home where wild things roam;
there’s danger everywhere but you’re not alone.
Angels all around you out in the wilderness.

4.  //You are my beloved out in the wilderness.//
When you were baptized you realized
you’d heard the voice of God from the opening skies.
You are my beloved out in the wilderness.
