14.02.23 Ordinary 7A Reflection

Our Scriptures have spoken to us, and our lives ought to speak back. That's how we love our religions, challenge them, care for them, transform them, and help them deliver their promises to the world.

Alzaré mis ojos a los montes + I will lift my eyes to the mountains
Guardará a Israel.//

Adonai, you are our keeper,
our keeper and shade at our side
by day the sun will not strike us,
the moon will not strike us by night.
Adonai will keep us from all evil;
God alone is the keeper of our days
//Adonai will keep our goings, Adonai will keep our comings, both now and forevermore.//

7th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Please stand, all who are able.

Song
1.  God, we thank you for our people, roots dug deep within the soil,
Hardy spirits, rich in loving, strong for struggle, bold for toil.
Faithful Rock of generations, you whom parents’ parents praised:
Here in hope as we remember may our song to you be raised.

2.  Thank you, God, for gentle pleasure:  lessons learned and secrets told,
Hopes and memories saved as treasure, passed to young ones by the old,
Pranks and glories, songs and stories, food by loving hands prepared.
God, we bless you for your presence in our tears and laughter shared.

3.  Still we must confess before you, sometimes, Savior, we have failed;
Though we worship and adore you, sometimes love has not prevailed.
Tempers racing, devil chasing, hearts estranged by ice or flame
You transform by ways forgiving.  Grace amazing!  Grace, your name!

4.  By your Spirit of creation keep us bold for risking still,
Eager in anticipation, ever strong to do your will.
Bind us close to one another, sharing life and death and birth,
Welcoming as sister, brother, all your children on the earth.

Call to Worship
One: O Holy God, we are gathered here to worship you today
All: Woke up this morning with my mind stayed on Jesus
One: We are here to praise you today
All: Woke up this morning with my mind stayed on Jesus
One: You have been present in each one of our lives this week
All: Singing and praying with my mind stayed on Jesus
One: You have been with us every moment of every day
All: Singing and praying with my mind stayed on Jesus
One: Guide us to be voices of justice, of hope, of peace in our world
All: Keep my mind stayed on Jesus
One: Make us your living examples of justice, of hope, of peace in our world.
All: Keep my mind stayed on Jesus

Song
Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there is hatred let me bring your love.
Where there is injury your pardon Lord,
And where there's doubt true faith in you.

Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope.
Where there is darkness only light,
and where there’s sadness only joy.

O Master, grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
To be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
It is in giving that we receive
And in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Prayer of Confession
NOT ON PPT

Love and mercy always awaits those who turn to God.
Let us pray.

All: I confess, O God,
that our world is not yet
the world you have called us to create.
There is bitterness and spite
among us.
For my part, O God,
I ask your forgiveness.
For the times I have failed to challenge
systems of oppression in my heart and in my world,
forgive me, O God.
I want to follow you, Jesus,
and live in a world that honors
your commandment
to love one another as we love ourselves.
Strengthen me to live this commandment
today and always.

—silent personal reflection—

One:  My friends we are set free: to be a forgiven people, and to become a forgiving people in all our dealings with those who sin against us.
All:  Thanks be to God.

Please stand, all who are able.

Song of Praise
//I ‘ve got a crown up in-a the Kingdom
Ain’t-a that good news.//
I’m going to lay down this world
Going to shoulder up my cross
Goin’ to take it home to Jesus
Ain’t that good news

//I ‘ve got a harp up in-a the Kingdom
Ain’t-a that good news.//
I’m going to lay down this world
Going to shoulder up my cross
Goin’ to take it home to Jesus

Prayer of the Day
NOT ON PPT

O God,
you spoke your word
and revealed your good news in Jesus, the Christ.
Fill all creation with that word again,
so that by proclaiming your joyful promises to all nations
and singing of your glorious hope to all peoples,
we may become one living body,
your incarnate presence on the earth. Amen.

Reading from Hebrew Scripture
Leviticus 19:1-3, 9-18

NOT ON PPT

God spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I your God am holy. You shall each revere your mother and father, and you shall keep my sabbaths: I am the Holy One your God. When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the Holy One your God.

You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; and you shall not lie to one another. And you shall not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God: I am the Holy One.  You shall not defraud your neighbor; you shall not steal; and you shall not keep for yourself the wages of a laborer until morning. You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind; you shall fear your God: I am the Holy One. You shall not render an unjust judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbor. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbor: I am the Holy One.  You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbor, or you will incur guilt yourself.  You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Holy One.

Reader:  Hear what the Spirit is saying to you today.
All:  Thanks be to God!

Psalm 119:33-40
Cantor, then all:  Elevate my understanding.  Ever in my heart keep watch.
Find my strength in your commandments for your truth is all I’ve sought.
Cantor:  Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes, and I will observe it to the end.
Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart.
All:  Elevate my understanding.  Ever in my heart keep watch.
Find my strength in your commandments for your truth is all I’ve sought.
Cantor:  Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.
Turn my heart to your decrees, and not to selfish gain.
All:  Elevate my understanding.  Ever in my heart keep watch.
Find my strength in your commandments for your truth is all I’ve sought.
Cantor:  Turn my eyes from looking at vanities; give me life in your ways.
Confirm to your servant your promise, which is for those who fear you.
All:  Elevate my understanding.  Ever in my heart keep watch.
Find my strength in your commandments for your truth is all I’ve sought.
Cantor:  Turn away the disgrace that I dread, for your ordinances are good.
See, I have longed for your precepts; in your righteousness give me life.
All:  Elevate my understanding.  Ever in my heart keep watch.
Find my strength in your commandments for your truth is all I’ve sought.

Sermon

Please stand, all who are able.

Song
May we find richness in the harvest of justice
Which Christ Jesus has ripened for us.
Bread for the journey, bread for the hungry,
All for the glory and praise of God.

1.  Gather with patience for those who have nothing.
Leave them your riches, and you will receive.
Make room for the poor ones, make way for the stranger;
for I am the Lord, the Lord your God.

2.  For to have mercy on those forgotten,
This is my true law, this is my command:
Clothe the naked, be home for the homeless,
Care for the prisoner, the sick and the lost.

3.  For to have little is to be in abundance.
To give what remains, to give all we have,
Is to walk with the poor ones, and become the stranger,
One with the Lord, the Lord our God.

May we find richness in the harvest of justice
Which Christ Jesus has ripened for us.
Bread for the journey, bread for the hungry,
All for the glory and praise of God.

Credo by W. E. DuBois
One:  I believe in God who made of one blood all races that dwell on earth.
All:  I believe that all people, black and brown and white, are sisters and brothers,
varying, through Time and Opportunity,
in form and gift and feature,
but differing in no essential particular,
and alike in soul and in the possibility of infinite development.
One:  I believe in the Prince of Peace.
All:  I believe that War is Murder.
One:  I believe that armies and navies are at bottom the tinsel and braggadocio of oppression and wrong;
All:  and I believe that the wicked conquest of weaker and darker nations by nations whiter and stronger but foreshadows the death of that strength.

Sing of colors, sing of colors that over the hills in profusion are springing;
Sing of colors of the birds that fly outside my window their canticles singing;

And when sin’s deadly shadow fell everywhere, Jesus your Word came in flesh to live with us. The world he made did not know him; his homeland refused him.

Now all who receive Christ have power to become children of God: born from above, they blow through the world with your Spirit, bearing witness for the truth of your Word. All who believe in Christ have left death for new life.

THIS COLUMN ON PPT

One:  It is truly right always and everywhere to praise you, Mother-Father God, Lover of all. Your wind swept the waters when our world began, and you spoke the Word  that was always your Word. Through that Word all things came to be, and the life of that Word lightened every life with the light darkness could not swallow.

But he fulfilled your purpose, and loved us to the end. On the cross he handed over the Spirit of life, flowing forever like water from a living spring.

All who hear Christ’s voice follow him, as sheep follow their own shepherd, on the true and living way that leads to God. All who love, as Christ loved, live like branches of a vine, drawing life from the one who laid down his life for his friends.

[BLANK SLIDE HERE FOR WORDS OF INSTITUTION]

Therefore, Father-Mother God, of all the things that are yours, we offer you these, which are yours especially. We offer them gladly, as Jesus told us, giving thanks for his death and resurrection. And having seen the glory of the Chosen One, coming from God the Holy One, full of unending love, we praise you and we bless you.

All:  We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, our God.  Te adoramos, te bendecimos, te damos gracias y oramos a ti, nuestro Dios.

Todos/as: We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, our God.  Te doramos, te bendecimos, te damos gracias y oramos a ti, nuestro Dios.

Now, as Jesus promised, send us your loving Spirit, to make this bread and this cup the life-giving body and blood of your Chosen One, and to make us perfectly one, as you and Christ are one. For now the darkness of this world is overthrown; and together with angels and archangels, and all the company of heaven, we sing the triumphal song—

Todos/as:
//Holy, holy, holy is the Lord.//
God of power, God of might.
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord.

//Santo, santo, santo es nuestro Dios.//
Dios de gloria y poder.
Santo, santo, santo es nuestro Dios.

Cuando el pobre + When the poor ones

When at last all those who suffer find their comfort,
when they hope though even hope seems hopelessness,
when we love though hate at times seems all around us,
then we know that God still goes that road with us,
then we know that God still goes that road with us.

Cuando crece la alegría y nos inunda,
cuando dicen nuestros labios la verdad,
cuando amamos el sentir de los sencillos,
va Dios mismo en nuestro mismo caminar,
va Dios mismo en nuestro mismo caminar.

When our homes are filled with goodness in abundance,
when we learn how to make peace instead of war,
when each stranger that we meet is called a neighbor,
then we know that God still goes that road with us,
then we know that God still goes that road with us.
