Song
1.  God, we thank you for our people, roots dug deep within the soil,
Hardy spirits, rich in loving, strong for struggle, bold for toil.
Faithful Rock of generations, you whom parents’ parents praised:
Here in hope as we remember may our song to you be raised.

2.  Thank you, God, for gentle pleasure:  lessons learned and secrets told,
Hopes and memories saved as treasure, passed to young ones by the old,
Pranks and glories, songs and stories, food by loving hands prepared.
God, we bless you for your presence in our tears and laughter shared.

3.  Still we must confess before you, sometimes, Savior, we have failed;
Though we worship and adore you, sometimes love has not prevailed.
Tempers racing, devil chasing, hearts estranged by ice or flame
You transform by ways forgiving.  Grace amazing!  Grace, your name!

4.  By your Spirit of creation keep us bold for risking still,
Eager in anticipation, ever strong to do your will.
Bind us close to one another, sharing life and death and birth,
Welcoming as sister, brother, all your children on the earth.

Call to Worship
One:  God of Life,
All: you are as near to us as our breath.
One: Touch our eyes,
All: that we may see you in one another.
One: Open our ears,
All: that we may hear your voice in the cries of the oppressed.
One: Enter our hearts,
All: that we may be filled with your love toward all people.
One: Come, O God of life and breath and wholeness.
All: Be with us now. Show us the way to new life and grant us the courage to be people of your Way.

Please be seated

Song
Elyse sings:
The first one ever, oh, ever to know
Of the birth of Jesus was the Maid Mary,
Was Mary the Maid of Galilee,
And blessed is she, is she who believes.
Oh, blessed is she who believes in the Lord,
Oh, blessed is she who believes.
She was Mary the Maid of Galilee,
And blessed is she, is she who believes.

All sing:
The first one ever, oh, ever to know
Of Messiah, Jesus, when he said, “I am he,”
Was the Samaritan woman who drew from the well
And blessed is she, is she who perceives.
Oh, blessed is she who perceives the Lord,
Oh, blessed is she who perceives.
‘Twas the Samaritan woman who drew from the well,
And blessed is she, is she who perceives.

The first ones ever, oh, ever to know
Of the rising of Jesus, his glory to be,
Were Mary, Joanna, and Magdalene,
And blessed are they, are they who see.
Oh, blessed are they who see the Lord,
Oh, blessed are they who see.
They were Mary, Joanna, and Magdalene,
And blessed are they, are they who see.

Prayer of Confession
NOT ON PPT

This prayer is designed for any persons to say the "Statement" and/or "Response" who feels moved to do so.  Though originally written as a prayer from man to woman, this version is meant to take into account the injury inflicted by women against women, as well as self-inflicted injuries caused by oppression.

Statement: If I or any other has ever done anything to hurt you or offend you, and for the manifold transgressions against women, you and every other, I apologize.
Response: I remember and I forgive.
Statement: If you have ever felt demeaned, uncherished, or your womanhood betrayed in any way; If I or any other has failed to see the light of you and the brilliance of your female spirit, on behalf of all of us, I apologize.
Response: I remember and I forgive.
Statement: May the beauty of women and the power of women and the vision of women now burst forth in our world and in our consciousness. May the minds of all be healed. May the heart of woman repair.
Response: I remember and I forgive.
Statement: I commit to you and to God that I am, and shall be, one who sees your value. I see your light. God bless you and your sisters, our mothers, and our daughters. I honor you.
Response: I remember and I forgive.

Song of Praise
The matriarchs' God and ours
who leads us onward still,
inspire our hearts, unite our minds
to work God's will.
Rock, Saviour, Maker, Lamb,
we sing your praise anew;
the Mother, Father, great 'I am',
we worship you.

Prayer of the Day
NOT ON PPT

Holy Lord, maker of us all,
you call us to love our neighbors as ourselves
and teach us that faith without works is dead.
Open us to the opportunities for ministry that lie before us,
where faith and words and the need of our neighbor
come together in name of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

Alleluia

Gospel Reading
Matthew 10:5-15

NOT ON PPT

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts, no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for laborers deserve their food. Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave. As you enter the house, greet it. If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town. Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.”

Reader:  The gospel of Jesus Christ.

Sermon

Please stand, all who are able.

Song
Let us build the city of God.
May our tears be turned into dancing!
Jesus Christ, our light and our love,
has turned the night into day!

Awake from your slumber!
Arise from your sleep!
A new day is dawning
for all those who weep.
The people in darkness
have seen a great light.
The Lord of our longing
has conquered the night.

Let us build the city of God.
May our tears be turned into dancing!
Jesus Christ, our light and our love,
has turned the night into day!

We are daughters of morning;
we are sons of the day.
The one who has loved us
has brightened our way.
The God of all kindness
has called us to be
a light for the people
to set their hearts free.

Let us build the city of God.
May our tears be turned into dancing!
Jesus Christ, our light and our love,
has turned the night into day!

O comfort my people;
make gentle your words.
Proclaim to my city
the day of her birth.
O city of gladness,
now lift up your voice!
Proclaim the good tidings,
that all may rejoice!

Let us build the city of God.
May our tears be turned into dancing!
Jesus Christ, our light and our love,
has turned the night into day!

Affirmation of Faith
One:  We celebrate a faith that is measured not by the usual signs of greatness, but by the marks of love;
All:  And we celebrate the God who gives it.

One:  We celebrate a love that is measured not by romance or emotion, but by acts of compassion and service;
All:  And we celebrate the God who gives it.

One:  We celebrate a life that is measured not by the trappings of wealth or power, but by the lives that are healed and enriched;
All:  And we celebrate the God who gives it.

One:  God, who measures every heart and life, we praise you for the life that is revealed in Christ, and for the Spirit who empowers us to follow Christ’s example.
All:  And we praise you for the love and grace which we find in you, receive from you, and against which we shall ultimately be measured.  Amen.
