Hymn
O for a thousand tongues to sing
my great Redeemer’s praise,
the glories ever echoing
the triumphs of God’s grace.

My gracious Savior and my God,
assist me to proclaim,
to spread through all the earth abroad
the honors of your name.

Jesus! the name that calms our fears,
that bids our sorrows cease
is music in the sinner’s ears,
is life, and health, and peace!

Glory to God, and love and praise
be ever, ever given
by all the saints in every age,
the church in earth and heaven.

Call to Worship
Martin Luther King, Jr.’s, Pledge of Nonviolence
One:  As you prepare to march meditate on the life and teachings of Jesus
All:  Remember the nonviolent movement seeks justice and reconciliation, not victory.
One:  Walk and talk in the manner of love; for God is love.
All:  Pray daily to be used by God that all men and women might be free.
One:  Sacrifice personal wishes that all might be free.
All:  Observe with friend and foes the ordinary rules of courtesy.
One:  Perform regular service for others and the world.
All:  Refrain from violence of fist, tongue and heart.
One:  Strive to be in good spiritual and bodily health.
All:  This is our work.  This is our worship.  Amen!

Song
We are going
Heaven knows where we are going
We know we will
We will get there
Heaven knows how we will get there
We know we will
//It will be hard we know
And the road will be muddy and rough
But we'll get there
Heaven knows how we will get there
We know we will//

Prayer of Confession
One:  If we’re honest, compassion does not come easy to us, God;
We see others who struggle;
those without homes, or food;
All:  those dying from curable diseases, simply because
they can’t get access to the medicine they need;
One:  those who have lost loved ones through death or circumstance,
and long for human companionship;
All:  those who are persecuted and judged because of their difference;
One:  those who are facing the awful consequences
of bad choices they have made;
All:  and those who must live with the consequences
of choices that others make that impact their lives;
One:  It all just feels like it’s too much, and there’s nothing we can do.

All:  But, we know that’s not true – we know that compassion is enough;
that when we allow ourselves to feel,
compassion will lead us to do what we can,
and that this will make a difference.

One:  And so, we pray first for ourselves:
that you would soften our hearts,
and still our fears,
and lead us into those acts of compassion
that we are capable of doing.

All:  And then we pray for all of these others
whose lives can be changed
through small, simple acts of care;
that you would disturb us, and others like us,
until we finally step up and play our part
in the saving of your world;
and that enough of us would answer your call,
that the needs of the hurting ones
may be met.

In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.

Song of Praise
Have courage my soul, and let us journey on,
though the night is dark and I am far from home.
Thanks be to God the morning light appears.

//The storm is passing over, the storm is passing over,
the storm is passing over, hallelu.//

//Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallellujah,
the storm is passing over, the storm is passing over,
the storm is passing over, hallelu.//

Prayer of the Day

Most wonderful God, most faithful Friend, please remove from us the rowdy chatter of the world, and open our ears to the still small voice of your Spirit as you witness to the truth of Christ Jesus. Enable us to hear clearly, to understand profoundly, to respond freely, to serve lovingly and to worship delightedly. For your name’s sake.
Amen!

Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The Holy One called me before I was born, while I was in my mother’s womb God named me. God made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of God’s hand I was hidden; God made me a polished arrow, in God’s quiver I was hidden away. And God said to me, “You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.” But I said, “I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the Holy One, and my reward with my God.” And now the Holy One says, who formed me in the womb to be a servant of God, to bring Jacob back to God, and that Israel might be gathered to God, for I am honored in the sight of the Holy One, and my God has become my strength—God says, “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”
Thus says God, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations, the slave of rulers, “Kings shall see and stand up, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, because of God, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

Psalm 40:1-11
Cantor, then all:  You are my help and my rescuer.  My God, do not delay.
Cantor:  I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in theLord.
Happy are those who make the Lord their trust, who do not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after false gods.
All:  You are my help and my rescuer.  My God, do not delay.
I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; see, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O Lord.
I have not hidden your saving help within my heart, I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.
Do not, O Lord, withhold your mercy from me; let your steadfast love and your faithfulness keep me safe forever.
All:  You are my help and my rescuer.  My God, do not delay.

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and Mother, and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in God, in speech and knowledge of every kind—just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you— so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ.  God will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by God you were called into the fellowship of God’s Child, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Sermon

Please stand, all who are able.

Hymn
1.  Blest be the God of Israel,
the everliving Lord,
you come in power to save your own,
your people Israel.
For Israel you now raise up
salvation’s tower on high
in David’s house, who reigned as king
and servant of the Lord.

2.  Through holy prophets did you speak
your word in days of old,
that you would save us from our foes
and all who bear us ill.
On Sinai you gave to us
your covenant of love;
so with us now you keep your word
in love that knows no end.

3.  Of old you gave your solemn oath
to father Abraham;
whose seed a mighty race should be
and blest forevermore.
You vowed to set your people free
from fear of every foe,
that we might serve you all our days
in goodness, love, and peace.

4.  O tiny child, you name shall be
the prophet of the Lord;
the way of God you will prepare
to make God’s coming known.
You shall proclaim to Israel
salvation’s dawning day,
when God shall wipe away all sins
with mercy and with love.

5.  The rising sun shall set on us
to bring the light of day
to all who sit in darkest night
and shadow of the grave.
Our footsteps God shall safely guide
to walk the ways of peace,
whose name foreveremore be blest,
who lives and loves and saves.

Affirmation Based on the Writings of Dr. King
One:  I refuse to believe that we are unable to influence the events which surround us.
All:  I refuse to believe that we are so bound to racism and war, that peace, brotherhood and sisterhood are not possible.
One:  I believe there is an urgent need for people to overcome oppression and violence, without resorting to violence and oppression.
All:  I believe that we need to discover a way to live together in peace, a way which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of this way is love.
One:  I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality.  I believe that right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant.
All:  I believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits.
One:  I believe that what self-centered people have torn down, other-centered people can build up.
All:  By the goodness of God at work within people, I believe that brokenness can be healed.  "And the lion and the lamb shall lie down together, and everyone will sit under their own vine and fig tree, and none shall be afraid."  Amen.

Prayer Song
There’s a light, there’s a light in the darkness.
And the dark of the night cannot harm us.
We can trust not to fear for our comfort is near.
There’s a light, there’s a light in the darkness.

There is hope, there is hope in the darkness.
And the dark of the night cannot harm us.
We can trust not to fear for our comfort is near.
There is hope, there is hope in the darkness.

There is peace, there is peace in the darkness.
And the dark of the night cannot harm us.
We can trust not to fear for our comfort is near.
There is peace, there is peace in the darkness.

Hymn
Loving Spirit, loving Spirit,
       you have chosen me to be --
       you have drawn me to your wonder,
you have set your sign on me.

Like a mother you enfold me,
       hold my life within your own,
       feed me with your very body,
form me of your flesh and bone.

Like a father you protect me,
       teach me the discerning eye,
       hoist me up upon your shoulder,
let me see the world from high.

Friend and lover, in your closeness
       I am known and held and blessed:
       in your promise is my comfort,
in your presence I may rest.

Loving Spirit, loving Spirit,
       you have chosen me to be --
       you have drawn me to your wonder,
you have set your sign on me.
