READ THIS COLUMN

One + Uno/a: Now that same day two of the disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him.

Jesus: “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”

One + Uno/a: They stood still, their faces downcast.

Cleophas: “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

Jesus: “What things?”

Disciple + Discipulo 1: “About Jesus of Nazareth. He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people.

Disciple + Discipulo 2: The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.

Disciple + Discipulo 1: And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place.

Disciple + Discipulo 2: In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive.

Disciple + Discipulo 1: Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”

Jesus: “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”

Uno/a + One: Entonces, comenzando por Moisés y por todos los profetas, les explicó lo que se refería a él en todas las Escrituras.

Al acercarse al pueblo adonde se dirigían, Jesús hizo como que iba más lejos. Pero ellos insistieron:

Discipulos: —Quédate con nosotros, que está atardeciendo; ya es casi de noche.

Uno/a + One: Así que entró para quedarse con ellos. Luego, estando con ellos a la mesa, tomó el pan, lo bendijo, lo partió y se lo dio.

One + Uno/a: Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other,

Disciples: “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

One + Uno/a: They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.

Uno/a + One: Aquel mismo día dos de los discipulos se dirigían a un pueblo llamado Emaús, a unos once kilómetros de Jerusalén. Iban conversando sobre todo lo que había acontecido.Sucedió que, mientras hablaban y discutían, Jesús mismo se acercó y comenzó a caminar con ellos; pero no lo reconocieron, pues sus ojos estaban velados.

Jesús: —¿Qué vienen discutiendo por el camino?

Uno/a + One: Se detuvieron, cabizbajos.

Cleopas: —¿Eres tú el único peregrino en Jerusalén que no se ha enterado de todo lo que ha pasado recientemente?

Jesús: —¿Qué es lo que ha pasado?

Disciple + Discipulo 1: —Lo de Jesús de Nazaret. Era un profeta, poderoso en obras y en palabras delante de Dios y de todo el pueblo.

Disciple + Discipulo 2: Los jefes de los sacerdotes y nuestros gobernantes lo entregaron para ser condenado a muerte, y lo crucificaron; pero nosotros abrigábamos la esperanza de que era él quien redimiría a Israel.

Disciple + Discipulo 1: Es más, ya hace tres días que sucedió todo esto.

Disciple + Discipulo 2: También algunas mujeres de nuestro grupo nos dejaron asombrados. Esta mañana, muy temprano, fueron al sepulcro pero no hallaron su cuerpo. Cuando volvieron, nos contaron que se les habían aparecido unos ángeles quienes les dijeron que él está vivo.

Disciple + Discipulo 1: Algunos de nuestros compañeros fueron después al sepulcro y lo encontraron tal como habían dicho las mujeres, pero a él no lo vieron.

Jesús: —¡Qué torpes son ustedes —les dijo—, y qué tardos de corazón para creer todo lo que han dicho los profetas! ¿Acaso no tenía que sufrir el Cristo estas cosas antes de entrar en su gloria?

One + Uno/a: And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly,

Disciples: “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.”

One + Uno/a: So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them.

Uno/a + One: Entonces se les abrieron los ojos y lo reconocieron, pero él desapareció. Se decían el uno al otro:

Discipulos: —¿No ardía nuestro corazón mientras conversaba con nosotros en el camino y nos explicaba las Escrituras?

Uno/a + One: Al instante se pusieron en camino y regresaron a Jerusalén. Allí encontraron a los once y a los que estaban reunidos con ellos. «¡Es cierto! —decían—. El Señor ha resucitado y se le ha aparecido a Simón.» Los dos, por su parte, contaron lo que les había sucedido en el camino, y cómo habían reconocido a Jesús cuando partió el pan.
